After a busy and exciting few months organizing around the 85th annual Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) convention, MISN is gearing up for our 2017 Spring into Action season!
Stay tuned for more 🙂
MISN is also working on a new data project! As a grassroots organization with ties to mining-impacted communities around the world, we know that stories of communities’ experiences of violence in relation to Canadian mining companies’ encroachment onto their territories are endless. Many projects, reports, and academic investigations have examined trends of violence in specific geographical areas but, to the best of our knowledge, there have been no systematic attempts to track the total number of of people who have been targeted, killed, injured/attacked, and/or criminalized (e.g. jailed, arrested, charged, harassed by police, etc.) in relation to Canadian mining operations worldwide. MISN is beginning a project that does just this, starting by gathering data, stories, and examples of these acts and experiences of violence. Once this data has been collected, we will be creating an online forum that displays this data and these stories in engaging and creative ways.
