Here is a guide to help you figure out what parts of Damage Control will be most useful to you. We hope you will read the whole thing but we understand that its length may make it inaccessible to some. The sections are broken down like this:
Intro: Read this if you want to know more about who we are and why we wrote this.
Historical Context: In this section we look at the issue of policing in Canada and models used to securitize large events such as the 2015 Pan Am Games.
Building Suspicions and Gathering Proof: This section tells the story of how we came to suspect that two people who joined our group in the lead up to the Pan Am Games were infiltrators.
Kicking Them Out: This section details our process of kicking these people out of our group and includes an annotated transcript of the conversation we had.
Going to the Media: We went public with our story in a mainstream newspaper! Here we explain our media strategy and some of the things we considered when telling a journalist our story.
Lessons Learned: If you only read one section, let it be this one! We explore how this experience has changed the way we think about security culture and how important building communities of care and trust is for the safety of our movements.
