Are you looking for a way to get involved in activism in Toronto?
Do you sometimes wonder how Canadian mining companies get away with the harms that they cause all over the world?
Do you care about resisting capitalism & colonialism and see mining injustice as a critical intersection between these systems of exploitation?
Do you have personal connections in countries impacted by Canadian mining?
Are you interested in solidarity-based community organizing that’s fun, creative, and grounded in relationships?
If you’ve answered yes to any of the above questions, we hope you’ll join us at the Mining Injustice Solidarity Network’s upcoming new members’ orientation. Learn more about the work that MISN does and how you can be involved! Everyone is welcome to attend.
What’s this orientation about?
Once or twice a year, MISN holds orientation sessions that are open to anyone interested in learning more about or contributing to MISN activities. This is an opportunity for you to get familiar with our working methods and our current campaigns, to ask questions, and to figure out how you might contribute to MISN based on your interests. If you have a passion or issue that you would like to see represented in MISN’s activities, we would love to hear about it and talk about how we may be able to work towards that. You don’t have to be an expert on mining issues or even certain about wanting to organize with MISN to attend! We do ask, however, that you be open to learning and working within an anti-oppressive framework (we’ll talk more about what this means to us at the orientation!).
MISN is a grassroots group that works entirely on a volunteer basis. The huge array of events, campaigns, and actions we organize year-round depends on a team of organizers (like you!) to bring it all together. This means that, in order to be effective in holding mining companies operating at home and abroad accountable, we need your skills, knowledge, and energy!
MISN is always open to welcoming new people into our working collective. If you are unable to attend this orientation but are interested in getting involved, please email us – if this is the case for a number of people we’ll hold another orientation soon. If you want to join later on in the year, you can email us at a later date so we can let you know when the next regular MISN meeting is, and make sure to give you an intro and answer any questions beforehand. However, we suggest coming to this orientation if you can – you won’t be the only new person in the room, and it’s a good chance to get to know one another.
If you have any questions, please feel free to email us: [email protected]
Please contact us if you need child care. We will have art supplies and a separate table in the same room with a designated child minder.
We haven’t settled on a final space yet for this orientation, but it will be wheelchair accessible (including washrooms). Most of our regular meetings also take place in a wheelchair accessible space. Please get in touch if there are any other accessibility matters that we can clarify and/or resolve for you. There will be vegan and gluten-free food available!
